HH: Hi, how are you?

Con: Very well !!!! It's always a great time when you have finished recording. The new album is doing very well so things are going great. We are currently busy rehearsing for some upcoming shows plus we have a new bass player whose name is Evan Harris. He is an amazing player and has really made a huge difference to our live sound.

HH: Could you introduce your recently complemented band with a few words to our readers? How do Australian boys become metal musicians?

Con: Eyefear was formed back in 93. Myself and Zain Kimmie (drums) are the only original members remaining. We released our first album independently Edge Of Existence in 95. We created quite a stir in the underground scene all over the world and just when things started to look promising we had line up problems. From 96 to 2001 we wasted five years of trying to find the right people to join the band. Once Danny Cecati joined (ex-Pegazus) things started taking shape. In 2003 we recorded 9 Elements Of Inner Vision and while recording we signed with Intromental management. That lead to our first record deal with Massacre records who released 9 Elements in 2004 in Europe and Australia. Nightmare Records signed us for the US. We have since released A World Full Of Grey in 2007 and our of course our new album The Unseen in 2008 both through our new label Dockyard 1.
Here in Australia although not the biggest metal scene compared to Europe we still have a very healthy scene. We basically grew up listening to Metallica, Slayer, Megadeath, Helloween, King Diamond etc back in the 80's. We are and have been quite up to date with the HEAVY METAL WORLD !!!!!

HH: Could you describe the Australian metal scene more? Where are the differences between the European and the Australian fan basement?

Con: The Australian Metal scene is doing really well. We have bands from all over Australia that cover all the genres in metal being from Hard Rock to Black Metal. A lot of Australian bands are now performing at overseas festivals and supporting some of the biggest bands in the world. In turn a lot of overseas bands are now gracing our shores and playing in front of some decent crowds. The only disappointing factor in our scene is that our local metal heads don't support the local bands as much as they probably should. A lot of the fans have this aura lets say that because we are Australian bands we are no good. This mentality really hurts the scene. That's the only difference between the Australian and the European fans.

HH: How does the country form the music? Do you see a fusion between the place where you live and the music you make?

Con: The problem with the place we live is we are so far away. It costs a fortune just to get over to Europe so it makes it very difficult for us to get over their and play for you guys. To build a fan base you need to play to different people not just to the same 500 people in your city. Personally I think if some of the Australian bands had easier access to some of Europe's biggest festivals on a regular basis we would see the Australian scene would be a lot bigger than it is and the bands also being much more successful.

HH: Let's talk about your album: How are the reactions about your new album The Unseen so far?

Con: All round we have been praised for lifting our standard from the previous albums and as a musician that's what you want to do. Feedback from our fans has been even more impressive so it's great to know that we haven't let them down even though we have taken a slightly different approach with this album.

HH: Did the reviews meet your expectations? Or are you surprised by the feedback that you got?

Con: The reviews have been fantastic. The Unseen has been received even better than our previous releases in general. You are always going to get some bad reviews because it is impossible to please everybody but like I said in general the feedback has been great.

HH: What do you think about your album? Are you happy with the result? Is there anything that you would change or improve if you could?

Con: We are very pleased with the final product. From the songs all the way to the cover artwork we are very pleased. The whole process was very fluent and everything flowed really well. We never thought we could write and record an album in ten months but we did. I don't think there is anything we would change. Maybe sales of 100,000 with this release!!!!!!!

HH: What are your plans over the next time? New album in process of planning? Or another project?

Con: At the moment we are just rehearsing and getting ready to play some shows around Australia and possibly Europe. We haven't even discussed the words recording or writing and probably won't till the end of the year. As for other projects, don't think it will happen this year apart from maybe a couple of guest guitar solos.

HH: Do you make any plans to start a tour? If that's so, will you come to Germany, too?

Con: Probably not a tour but most likely festivals. I can't name them yet but hopefully it will all fall into place and we will finally get to Europe and Germany once and for all. It's long been a dream of ours to play in Europe and hopefully this will be the year.

HH: For some musicians their work is their way of life or it is their therapy. What does music mean to you?

Con: I guess I am in the therapy category because I still have a job. Music is a release for me from everything that is happening in my life at the time. As soon as I close the door and pick up the guitar and either start writing or rehearsals it doesn't matter how bad life might be at the time the only thing I feel is music. Hard to sort of explain but its like I'm in another world.

HH: What is your general ambition behind your work?

Con: To write music that not only satisfies me but also the fans. I would never release an album that had songs that I wasn't happy with just to try and satisfy other peoples needs. That has always been my main ambition in music.

HH: What does the internet mean to your work? Advantage or disadvantage?

Con: Both. The advantages are enormous because you can reach out to so many fans through the internet. Myspace is such a huge promotional tool for bands. You can introduce your music to so many fans and fans themselves find so many new bands that they probably would never had come to. Gone are the days when you use to go your local metal store and listen to whats come out. You can now do that all from the comfort of your home. The disadvantages as we all know are just as enormous. People are able to download music for free which hurts bands and record companies very much. Some fans don't realise that without their support bands can't go on. Recording an album is not free and neither is touring. For example being so far away it costs a fortune alone just for us to get over to Europe. It's just like a shop if you don't sell your stock and people are stealing from you in the end you are going to close business.

HH: If you don't play an instrument or write a song what are your favourite activities?

Con: I am a huge fan of football and also enjoy fishing and enjoy racing greyhounds. Also taking my 4WD off road is also a big thrill for me. But most of all enjoy spending time with my wife and two sons.

HH: Thanks for your time. Anything else you want to say?

Con: Thank you for your time and for spreading the name EYEFEAR. Thanks to all the fans out their that have shown their support hope to see you all this year and to the new ones check out THE UNSEEN !!!!!!!!!!
HORNS UP!!!!!
