HH: With Who's The Boss In The Factory, Karmakanic have released another fine record. Congratulations! How's been the feedback so far?

Jonas: Thank you, the reviews and the overall response is just great so far. I never in my entire life read so many good reviews of a record that's produced by me I'm overwhelmed.

HH: Regarding Who's The Boss In The Factory some people will think: "Oh my god, another Swedish prog-record. Ain't there enough of that stuff yet?" Why should we buy Who's The Boss In The Factory?

Jonas: Because I believe that Karmakanic has a unique sound both jazzy and progressive in places but also some traditional singer song writing where we are focusing on just good melodies. I also think that we have among the best players in the field and that alone could make it worth listening to.

HH: Again, you've had several guest appearances by high class musicians, not to mention the band's core. How does that influence the song writing and recording process? Does it make it more difficult to come to terms with professionals than with less talented bandmembers?

Jonas: I would say the more talent they got the easier it is to work with them. The reason is that a good musician will find his own part to play where a less talented guy needs guidance. I provide the basic structure for the song, the rest is up to the guys playing it.

HH: While your first record was very similar to your main band The Flower Kings, its successors Wheel Of Life and now Who's The Boss In The Factory show a development in a different direction. Do you think you've found a typical Karmakanic-Style yet?

Jonas: I hope so, at least I think we have a certain "Karmakanish " sound.

HH: On Karmakanic's debut Entering The Spectra a plot connected the songs contentually. Where's the golden thread on Who's The Boss In The Factory? Did you have any concept for writing the record? What gave you inspiration?

Jonas: We don't have a story that combines the different songs with each other. The subjects on this one is more different reflections from different things that have happened or will happen. The Idee of the song "Who's the boss in the factory" came from a well known case in the U.S. There was this black guy that was sentenced to death because of a murder he did in his youth. Several years later he was really a different person and was kind of rehabilitated. The Governor could pardon him but didn't. So me and Inger (my wife) got the idea to write a story about "The boss in the factory". It doesn't matter if you're right it doesn't matter if you're wrong. The only thing that matters is "who's the boss in the factory".
Think of this, you have the power to pardon a man from a death sentence buy just signing a paper. But you don't take that opportunity. The boss in the factory is the guy with the pen.

HH: The album cover is exceptional. Who is that "Boss In The Factory" displayed? How did you come to the title for your record?

Jonas: I think when you looking for a title it go to be something that is coherent with the music. Normally I take the different titles that is on the cd and kinda picture them on a cover. The title which I get a visual idea from will be the title for the disc.

HH: Why did you decide to split the relatively short song "Eternally" in two?

Jonas: At first we only had "Eternally pt: 2" but I felt that we needed a piano intro that sets the mood for the piece. I asked Lalle to just improvise over the feel he got from "Eternally pt: 2". I did for an hour and I just picked the part that I liked the most. It was easier from publishing point of view to divide it into 2 songs.

HH: Your MySpace page as well as www.reingoldmusic.com appear to be a bit out of date. How come they say you were still at work on Who's The Boss In The Factory?

Jonas: Oops, I need to look in to that.

HH: What meaning has the band's name "Karmakanic"?

Jonas: It doesn't have a meaning, it's just a play on words. I had a competiotion on the Flower Kings' mailing list when it was time for a name on the band. Karmakanic was the winning name from 200 different proposals.

HH: After about seven years and two records, what's your resume on Karmakanic? How long will you be going on with the project?

Jonas: As long we all enjoy it. Karmakanic is not here to be a multi economic thing, we just having fun. As long as we can do that and produce high quality material we will continue.

HH: Finally, the last words are yours.

Jonas: Try to see the opportunities in life rather than always focusing on the problems. That creates a better environment to be in.

HH: Thanks a lot for the Interview! Hope to see you in south Germany someday.

Jonas: Thanks a lot guys...
